Dear Xuánzàng,

I came to you through Tarantino. Is that wrong? I had seen both parts of Kill Bill and then someone mentioned you and off I went. I left and returned several times over the course of a year but now I feel that you and Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie and the rest are my brothers. Your bravery is mine and your victories stir my heart.

This site was created as a companion to What He's Poised To Do (Harper Perennial), the recently released collection of short fiction by Ben Greenman, an editor at the New Yorker. The collection (which the Los Angeles Times called "astonishing") uses letters and letter-writing to investigate human connection and disconnection. This site has a related mission, which is to allow readers to interact directly with literary characters. Letters should be addressed to your favorite characters and sent to LettersWithCharacter@gmail.com.

Letters can be funny, sad, digressive, trenchant, or trivial. We receive too many submissions to publish every one; we strive for a balance of genres and periods. Letters must be written by a real person and must also address an unreal one. There are no other requirements. We reserve the right to edit, and letters will be credited to the author's full name unless specified.
